The truth about lead-free wicks
Let’s talk about lead wicks.
You’ve probably seen brands boasting about how their candles are “lead-free,” as though they’re doing you a huge favour.
Here’s the truth: lead wicks were banned in 2003. Yup, you read that right—brands bragging about lead-free wicks are just stating the obvious.
In the U.S., lead wicks were banned over 20 years ago, and the vast majority of candle wicks are now made from cotton or other safe materials. So when a brand claims to be “lead-free,” they’re not doing anything special—they’re just following the law.
It’s the equivalent of saying, “We don’t put arsenic in our candles!” Well, good. We didn’t think you would.
At No Common Scents, we don’t need to brag about things like lead-free wicks because, well, it’s kind of a given. We use cotton wicks because they’re clean, safe, and help our candles burn beautifully.
So, the next time you see “lead-free wicks” slapped on a candle label, just give it a little chuckle. It’s marketing fluff, and we’re here to cut through the nonsense.
